In the two spaces above we opened the staircase into the living room with an archway to give the room a bigger and more open feeling. We also had a custom mantle piece installed to add elegance (see below).

In this family room off of the kitchen, we took out the ceiling that was too low and loved the exposed rafters but to keep them exposed, we needed to take off the roof and add 6 inches of insulation above the rafters and under the roof to make sure the room was insulated properly for our Wisconsin winters. The door to the backyard was also very short so we added a steel beam over the door for stability and installed a new raised door so that tall people did not have to duck their head when going in and out. All of the windows in this room were also reconfigured and replaced to better match the early 1900 architecture and to match the windows in the rest of the home. New exterior wall insulation, new lighting/electrical and new base board heating was also part of the renovation of this room.
